Original etching. 69x 44 cms(plate size plus 10 cms extra margins on each side.Fine condition. Signed at the bottom right corner Cav Piranesi fec. This fine etching represents  the caryatids and decorated frieze that were found at the Strozzi vineyard close to the Via Appia Antica in different times and later on splitted between the Villa Albani and Villa Montalto. the name of the sculptors were preserved being Creton and Nicola from Athens.The four central statues were carved by these scultors by order of Herodes Atticus in II AD.They formed part of the triopion of house tuomb of a woman named Regilla probably linked to the cult of Demeter.

This kind of  vases were the outcome of the works of Piranesi as restorer and dealer in antiquities.He was a master in the integration of ancient sculptural fragments with the result of fancy objects that catched the imagination and taste of the "grand tour" travellers in Rome.His clientel were active buyers of these antiquities that nowadays are displayed in the most important museums worldwide. The text mentions that the vase was preserved at the Piranesi museum at palazzo Tomati in Rome.This etching comes from the Parisian edition printed by his son Francesco.
