First edition. 1 text vol in 8vo and 1 atlas in oblong folio(50x32 cms). XLIV, XII,284 pgs,frontispiece,2 folding facsimile manuscripts.1 portrait of Joao Da Costa. Atlas with title page (browned) and 15 printed maps based on the manuscript logbook. Modern half red leather binding,red cloth covers.Atlas with some bowning and waterstaining affecting title page and right upper corner of plate leaves without touching printed surface. textvolume with some browning in first leaves.
First description of the Indian coast difficult to find complete with the plates atlas. first complete edition of Castro's exploration of the Goan coast. Dom João de Castro (1500-48) was a naval officer and later Viceroy of Portuguese India. In 1538 he embarked on his first voyage to India, arriving at Goa and immediately proceeding to the defense of Diu. Viceroy Castro died at Goa in 1548.
